The best PayPal alternatives are not the same for every payment. Stripe is the strongest all-round option for online checkout and subscriptions, Square is built for point of sale, Helcim can reduce card costs for established US and Canadian merchants, Venmo Business is inexpensive for direct US payments, GoCardless is designed for low-cost bank debit, Wise or Payoneer can be better for specific international routes, and Revolut Business or SumUp deserve a place on a UK shortlist.

A lower headline rate does not automatically mean a lower total cost. The correct comparison includes the payment method, merchant country, customer country, fixed fee, currency conversion, withdrawal cost, refund policy, dispute exposure, subscription fee, and the checkout experience customers expect.
Last verified: August 29, 2026. This guide uses public standard pricing from each provider’s official website. It excludes negotiated rates, temporary promotions, taxes on fees, and optional products unless stated. Availability and account-specific prices can differ.
Best PayPal alternatives: quick picks
| Payment need | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Online cards, subscriptions, or a custom checkout | Stripe | Strong APIs and broad online-payment tooling with standard US domestic card pricing below PayPal Checkout. |
| In-person retail, restaurants, and services | Square | Integrated point of sale, hardware, inventory, invoices, and business tools. |
| Growing US or Canadian card volume | Helcim | Interchange-plus pricing and automatic volume discounts instead of one flat card rate. |
| Direct or QR payments from US customers | Venmo Business | A low published direct-payment rate and familiar mobile experience, but US-only and owned by PayPal. |
| Recurring invoices and bank debit | GoCardless | Low-cost ACH or Direct Debit with a domestic transaction cap; UK high-value Direct Debit can add a surcharge. |
| International bank transfers and currency conversion | Wise Business | Multi-currency account details and conversion at the mid-market rate plus a disclosed fee. |
| Marketplace payouts and global freelancers | Payoneer | Local receiving accounts, marketplace integrations, and cross-border collection tools. |
| UK online consumer cards plus business banking | Revolut Business | Low domestic consumer-card pricing inside a paid multi-currency business account. |
| Low-volume UK card-present sales | SumUp | Simple pay-as-you-go in-person rate with no monthly plan required. |
Our overall pick: Stripe is the most complete direct alternative for a typical online business. Our lowest-cost bank-payment pick: GoCardless. Our international transfer pick: Wise Business. A merchant may still keep PayPal as a wallet option while using another provider for cards or bank payments.
Compare the PayPal cost before switching
Start with the PayPal route you actually use. For example, PayPal currently lists US domestic PayPal Checkout at 3.49% + $0.49, while current PayPal Goods and Services fees, standard card fees, invoice routes, ACH, QR codes, and other products can differ. PayPal alternatives fee comparison
The table below uses standard United States pricing because a single global rate would be misleading. Card, wallet, and bank-transfer rows are labeled separately because they do not provide identical checkout speed, protection, dispute rights, or customer experience.
| Provider and route | Published US standard price | Fee on $100 | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| PayPal Checkout — domestic | 3.49% + $0.49 | $3.98 | PayPal wallet / Guest Checkout route; not every PayPal product uses this rate. |
| PayPal — standard domestic credit or debit card | 2.99% + $0.49 | $3.48 | A card-processing row; not the same product as the PayPal wallet checkout. |
| Stripe — domestic online card | 2.90% + $0.30 | $3.20 | International cards and currency conversion add cost. |
| Square Free — online or invoice card | 3.30% + $0.30 | $3.60 | Current Free-plan rate; API and paid-plan pricing can differ. |
| Venmo Business — direct or QR payment | 1.90% + $0.10 | $2.00 | US-only mobile wallet; not an international card processor. |
| GoCardless Standard — domestic ACH | 0.50% + $0.05, capped at $5 | $0.55 | Bank debit is slower and has different authorization and return risks than cards. |
| Helcim — domestic ACH | 0.50% + $0.25, capped at $6 | $0.75 | Card pricing is variable interchange plus, so one exact card example would be misleading. |
| Wise Business — domestic consumer card | 2.90% + $0.30 | $3.20 | International or business cards are 4.20% + $0.30 in the published US card-acceptance price. |
| Payoneer — client pays by US ACH | 1.00% | $1.00 | Fees depend on sender, recipient, corridor, withdrawal, and currency. |
On this specific $100 example, Stripe saves $0.28 compared with PayPal’s standard domestic card rate and $0.78 compared with PayPal Checkout. Square Free online costs $0.12 more than the standard PayPal card row but saves $0.38 compared with PayPal Checkout. Venmo, ACH, and receiving-account routes can be cheaper, but only when the customer and sale are eligible for that different payment method.
PayPal alternatives in the UK: fee comparison
UK pricing is materially different from US pricing. The examples below assume a UK-registered business, a domestic £100 payment, GBP settlement, standard public pricing, and no optional service. Bank debit, online cards, and in-person cards remain different payment routes.
| UK provider and route | Published standard price | Fee on £100 | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| PayPal — All Other Commercial Transactions | 2.90% + £0.30 | £3.20 | Representative general commercial route. |
| PayPal — qualifying card-funded payment from a user without a PayPal account | 1.20% + £0.30 | £1.50 | A specific qualifying route, not PayPal’s universal card rate. |
| Stripe — standard UK card online | 1.50% + £0.20 | £1.70 | Premium, EEA, international, and currency-conversion pricing is higher. |
| Square Online — UK card | 1.40% + £0.25 | £1.65 | Invoices, manual entry, card on file, and non-UK cards use different rates. |
| Revolut Business — UK consumer Visa/Mastercard online | 1.00% + £0.20 | £1.20 | Requires a plan starting from £10 per month; AmEx, commercial, and international cards cost more. |
| GoCardless Standard — domestic Direct Debit | 1.00% + £0.20, capped at £4 | £1.20 | Prices exclude VAT; a 0.30% surcharge applies to the portion above £2,000 on Direct Debit. |
| SumUp Pay As You Go — in person | 1.69% | £1.69 | Card-present route; SumUp’s online rate is 2.50%. |
PayPal has announced an optional UK tiered commercial-rate plan effective October 1, 2026, with eligibility based on the previous calendar month’s volume. Those future rates are not treated as current pricing here. UK businesses should recheck PayPal’s policy update and live merchant-fee page after the effective date.
How we selected these PayPal alternatives
- Comparable use case: the provider must solve a real merchant, freelancer, invoicing, point-of-sale, or cross-border need.
- Public pricing: we prioritize providers that disclose useful standard rates or pricing mechanics.
- Total cost: we consider fixed fees, international additions, FX, withdrawals, subscriptions, refunds, and disputes—not only the percentage in a headline.
- Availability: a low rate is not useful if the product is unavailable in the merchant’s country or for the required business type.
- Payment experience: card checkout, bank debit, wallet payment, and marketplace payout are different products.
- Operational fit: integrations, recurring billing, point of sale, reconciliation, payout speed, and customer preference can outweigh a small rate difference.
We do not declare a provider “cheaper than PayPal” without naming the route. PayPal itself has multiple prices. Read our focused PayPal vs Stripe fee comparison to see why an equivalent-product comparison matters.
1. Stripe: best overall for online businesses
Stripe is the best general PayPal alternative for an online store, software product, marketplace, or subscription business that needs a flexible checkout. It supports hosted payment pages, embedded components, payment links, recurring billing, marketplace infrastructure, fraud tools, and more than 100 payment methods through one platform.
Stripe fees to know
- US domestic online card: 2.90% + $0.30.
- International card: add 1.50 percentage points.
- Currency conversion: add 1.00 percentage point when required.
- Manually entered card: add 0.50 percentage points.
- Standard account: no setup or monthly Payments fee; optional products have their own prices.
Best for: ecommerce, SaaS, marketplaces, custom integrations, and businesses that want cards plus local payment methods. Watch for: international and FX additions, separate prices for Billing or other products, and the engineering or platform work needed for a customized implementation.
Stripe’s standard US domestic card rate is lower than PayPal Checkout’s listed rate, but Stripe is not cheaper than every PayPal route. PayPal Expanded Checkout, direct Goods and Services, ACH, QR, and negotiated products require separate comparisons.
2. Square: best for point of sale and local businesses
Square is a strong alternative for retailers, cafés, salons, contractors, and service businesses that want payments connected to a point-of-sale system. Its value is not just the processing rate: hardware, Tap to Pay, inventory, invoices, appointments, customer tools, and next-business-day transfers can sit in the same system.
Square fees to know
- Square Free in person: 2.60% + $0.15.
- Square Free online or invoice card: 3.30% + $0.30.
- Online API: 2.90% + $0.30.
- Manually entered card: 3.50% + $0.15.
- Card issued outside the US: add 1.50 percentage points.
Best for: in-person selling, omnichannel retail, simple invoicing, and businesses that value one operational platform. Watch for: the online rate on the Free plan is closer to PayPal Checkout than Stripe’s standard domestic card rate, international cards cost more, and pricing changes by plan. Existing legacy plans can also show different rates.
3. Helcim: best for transparent interchange-plus pricing
Helcim is worth comparing when a US or Canadian business has steady card volume and wants the wholesale interchange cost separated from the processor’s margin. Unlike a flat rate, the final card cost changes with the card type, network, transaction method, merchant category, and risk profile.
Helcim fees to know
- Monthly card volume below $50,000: interchange + 0.40% + $0.08 in person, or interchange + 0.50% + $0.25 for keyed and online payments.
- Automatic volume discounts: the published processor margin falls across higher volume bands.
- ACH or Canadian EFT-PAD: 0.50% + $0.25, capped at $6, plus 0.05% on amounts over $25,000.
- Standard account: Helcim says it has no monthly, PCI, setup, annual, or cancellation fees for its standard merchant service.
Best for: established US and Canadian merchants that want card-cost transparency, automatic volume discounts, and low-cost ACH. Watch for: there is no universal card rate to place in a simple calculator. Premium, corporate, rewards, international, or manually entered cards can produce different interchange costs.
4. Venmo Business: best for direct US mobile payments
Venmo Business can be inexpensive for a US sole proprietor or small local business whose customers already use Venmo. Its published seller fee for direct and QR-code payments is 1.90% + $0.10, so a $100 payment costs $2.00.
Best for: local service providers, side businesses, creators, and small sellers receiving direct app or QR payments. Watch for: Venmo is a PayPal-owned service, not an independent replacement; it is not a general international solution; account and banking eligibility are US-focused; business features are mainly managed in the app; and seller fees are non-refundable.
Do not use a personal Venmo payment to disguise a sale. Commercial payments belong on the correct business route. Venmo’s legal fee page currently lists Tap to Pay at 2.29% + $0.09, compared with 1.90% + $0.10 for direct and QR payments. Confirm the price displayed for your account before accepting a new route.
5. GoCardless: best for ACH, Direct Debit, and recurring invoices
GoCardless replaces card checkout with bank debit. That makes it especially useful for subscriptions, memberships, retainers, instalments, and high-value invoices where the customer can authorize a bank payment instead of expecting an instant card purchase.
GoCardless fees to know
- US Standard domestic ACH: 0.50% + $0.05, capped at $5 per transaction.
- US Standard international collection: 1.50% + $0.05.
- UK Standard domestic Direct Debit: 1.00% + £0.20, capped at £4; prices exclude VAT.
- UK high-value Direct Debit: add 0.30% to the portion above £2,000. This surcharge does not apply to international payments or Instant Bank Pay.
- UK Standard international collection: 2.00% + £0.20.
- Higher plans: Advanced, Pro, and custom plans charge more for additional failure-recovery, verification, fraud, and customization features.
Best for: recurring billing, B2B invoices, education, memberships, professional retainers, and higher-value bank payments. Watch for: settlement is not the same as an instant card authorization; failed payments, chargebacks, refunds, mandate rules, and customer willingness to use bank debit still matter.
PayPal also offers eligible US invoice ACH at 1% capped at $10. Compare both products before moving an existing invoice workflow. Use our PayPal Invoice Fee Calculator to model the PayPal side.
6. Wise Business: best for multi-currency bank transfers
Wise Business is strongest when the alternative to PayPal is a bank transfer or currency conversion—not necessarily a card checkout. A business can obtain local account details, receive supported domestic transfers, hold currencies, convert at the mid-market rate plus a disclosed fee, and send money across borders.
Wise Business fees to know
- US business account details: a one-time $31 setup fee for account details in 22 currencies.
- UK business account details: a one-time £50 setup fee for the Advanced features that include account details.
- Supported domestic non-wire payments: free to receive in listed currencies after account details are available.
- Sending and conversion: fees vary by currency and currently start from 0.23% on the US page or 0.24% on the UK page.
- USD wire and Swift receipts: $6.11 per payment; GBP and EUR Swift receipts use separate fixed fees.
- US domestic consumer-card acceptance: 2.90% + $0.30.
- US international or business-card acceptance: 4.20% + $0.30.
Best for: international freelancers, remote teams, suppliers, contractors, and businesses receiving or converting multiple currencies. Watch for: card acceptance can be as expensive as or more expensive than a mainstream processor, bank details and Swift receipts can carry fixed costs, and availability differs by business location.
Compare processing and exchange-rate costs separately. Our guide to PayPal international transaction fees explains how cross-border classification and currency conversion create different fee layers.
7. Payoneer: best for marketplaces and global freelancers
Payoneer is designed around cross-border business payments, marketplace payouts, local receiving accounts, payment requests, balances, withdrawals, and business cards. It can be a practical alternative for a freelancer or marketplace seller, but the cheapest route is usually a receiving account or supported platform payout—not a client card.
Payoneer fees to know
- Another Payoneer customer: free to receive.
- Receiving account in local currency: free on the general public pricing page.
- Receiving account in a non-local currency: 1%, with a $1 minimum or equivalent.
- Client credit card: up to 3.99% + $0.49.
- US ACH or UK/EU bank account payment: 1%.
- Withdrawal to a bank in the same country and local currency: typically $1.50 where supported; other routes can range from 1.20% to 4%.
- Currency conversion between balances: 0.50%.
- Annual account fee: $29.95 if the account receives less than $6,000 or equivalent in any 12 consecutive months, subject to Payoneer’s stated exceptions and account terms.
Best for: marketplace sellers, international freelancers, contractors, and companies receiving payouts through integrated platforms. Watch for: card collection, withdrawal, conversion, and the annual account fee tied to low received volume can remove the apparent saving. Payoneer says the exact fee depends on the parties, payment method, currencies, location, account type, and onboarding channel.
8. Revolut Business: best UK all-in-one payment and banking option
Revolut Business combines online and in-person payment acceptance with multi-currency accounts, transfers, team cards, and expense tools. Its lowest published UK online rate applies to domestic consumer Visa and Mastercard payments, not every card.
- UK consumer Visa or Mastercard online: 1.00% + £0.20.
- UK consumer American Express online: 1.70% + £0.20.
- Domestic commercial or international card online: 2.80% + £0.20.
- UK consumer Visa or Mastercard in person: 0.80% + £0.02; UK consumer American Express is 1.70% + £0.02.
- Basic business plan: £10 per month; higher plans add larger transfer and currency-exchange allowances.
- Chargeback: £15, with the fee returned when the business wins according to Revolut’s published payment-acceptance terms.
Best for: eligible registered UK companies and partnerships that want payments, accounts, cards, transfers, and multi-currency management in one service. Watch for: Revolut Business does not support freelancers or sole traders through this product, the monthly plan changes the break-even point, and AmEx, commercial, or international cards cost more than UK consumer Visa or Mastercard.
9. SumUp: best for low-volume UK in-person sales
SumUp is a simple option for a UK market stall, mobile service, independent shop, or seasonal business that wants card-present acceptance without a monthly payment plan. The pay-as-you-go rate is easy to forecast, while a paid plan can reduce eligible domestic in-person card pricing for higher volume.
- Pay As You Go: £0 per month and 1.69% for standard in-person card payments.
- Online payments: 2.50%.
- Payments Plus: £19 per month and 0.99% for eligible domestic debit and credit cards in person; corporate, premium, international, and American Express cards remain 1.69%.
Best for: low-volume or seasonal UK card-present businesses that value simple pricing. Watch for: the online fee is not the same as the in-person headline, hardware still has an acquisition cost, and businesses needing complex subscriptions, marketplaces, or API-led workflows may need a different provider.

Why Google Pay, Apple Pay, Zelle, and Skrill are not top picks here
Google Pay and Apple Pay are wallet layers
Google Pay and Apple Pay can improve checkout convenience, but they are not independent merchant processors with a universal 0% rate. The wallet supplies a secure payment token to the merchant’s payment provider, and that provider’s standard processing fees still apply. A business might offer Google Pay through Stripe, Square, or another gateway; it should not compare “Google Pay at 0%” with PayPal processing.
Zelle is for eligible US bank transfers
Zelle can work for a small business only when its bank supports Zelle for that account type. Zelle does not publish one merchant-processing rate because banks set fees and limits. Both parties need eligible US bank accounts, international collection is not supported, purchase protection is not provided for authorized payments, and a completed payment to an enrolled recipient usually cannot be canceled. It may fit trusted customers, but it is not a full ecommerce checkout replacement.
Skrill is currently not accepting new Business Account applications
Skrill remains a digital wallet, but its official support center currently says new Business Account applications are not being accepted because of high demand. Its wallet, withdrawal, inactivity, and currency-conversion fees also vary by country. That makes it unsuitable for a current list of broadly available, lower-fee business alternatives.
How to switch payment providers without losing sales
- Export your real transaction mix. Separate domestic cards, international cards, PayPal wallet payments, bank payments, currencies, refunds, disputes, average order value, and monthly volume.
- Calculate total cost. Include percentage and fixed fees, FX, international additions, withdrawals, subscriptions, hardware, invoices, refunds, disputes, and platform charges.
- Compare like with like. Test an online card against another online card, and bank debit against another bank route. Do not call ACH equivalent to instant card checkout.
- Check eligibility and terms. Confirm supported country, industry, business type, settlement currency, account requirements, reserves, prohibited activities, and protection or dispute rules.
- Run both providers temporarily. Keep PayPal available while adding the alternative if customer demand for the PayPal wallet is meaningful.
- Test the complete journey. Verify checkout, mobile use, receipts, refunds, failed payments, webhooks, taxes, accounting exports, and payouts before moving traffic.
- Measure conversion as well as fees. Saving one percentage point is not a saving if more customers abandon checkout or support work increases.
- Review after 30 to 90 days. Compare effective cost, authorization, failure, refund, dispute, support, payout, and conversion performance using real data.
If PayPal remains valuable, the answer may be to optimize the route rather than replace the platform. Read how to reduce PayPal fees legally for options such as eligible ACH, Micropayments, standard transfers, and currency planning.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to PayPal for a small business?
Stripe is the strongest general starting point for online checkout, while Square is usually the better starting point for an in-person US business. GoCardless or an ACH product can cost less for recurring or high-value bank payments. The final choice depends on country, channel, payment method, volume, and customer preference.
Which PayPal alternative has the lowest fees?
Bank-payment products normally publish lower processing fees than cards. GoCardless Standard currently lists US ACH at 0.50% + $0.05 capped at $5, while Helcim lists ACH at 0.50% + $0.25 capped at $6, plus 0.05% on amounts over $25,000. They are not direct substitutes for instant card checkout, and failures, returns, authorization, and settlement time must be considered.
Is Stripe cheaper than PayPal?
Stripe’s standard US domestic online card fee of 2.90% + $0.30 is lower than PayPal Checkout’s listed 3.49% + $0.49. But PayPal publishes other card, ACH, direct Goods and Services, QR, invoice, and eligible product rates, so Stripe is not cheaper than every PayPal transaction. Compare the actual product route.
What is the best PayPal alternative for international payments?
Wise Business is a strong choice for international bank transfers and currency conversion. Payoneer is often a better fit for marketplace payouts and freelancers using local receiving accounts. Stripe is stronger for accepting international cards online. The best option changes with the sender, recipient, corridor, currency, funding method, and withdrawal route.
Can I use Venmo instead of PayPal for business?
A US business can use a Venmo Business Profile for eligible customer payments, including direct and QR payments. Venmo is owned by PayPal, is not a general international solution, and should not be used through a personal route to avoid business fees.
Is Google Pay a free PayPal alternative?
No. Google Pay does not add a separate Google transaction fee to the merchant’s existing processing stack, but the payment processor’s normal charges still apply. Google Pay is a wallet and checkout method, not a standalone processor with a universal 0% merchant rate.
Should I remove PayPal after choosing another provider?
Not necessarily. Many businesses use a primary processor for cards or bank payments and keep PayPal as an optional wallet. Test customer conversion, transaction cost, refunds, disputes, support, and payouts before removing a familiar payment method.
Bottom line
The best PayPal alternative is the provider that handles your real payment mix at the lowest total cost without damaging checkout conversion or operations. Start with Stripe for online cards, Square for point of sale, Helcim for interchange-plus card pricing, Venmo Business for eligible US direct payments, GoCardless for bank debit, Wise Business for multi-currency transfers, Payoneer for marketplace or freelancer payouts, Revolut Business for an integrated UK account and payment stack, or SumUp for simple low-volume UK card-present sales.
